He was born on 11th December 1922 in Qissa Khwani Bazaar, Market in Peshawar and the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa which is in Pakistan. He is one of the twelve children of his family whose father’s name was Lala Ghulam Sarwar Khan, a fruit merchant by Profession & mother Ayesha Begum.

He was studied at Barnes School, a Hill station school in Deolali, Nashik in the Indian state of Maharashtra. 

Career

His success as an actor comes in the 1950s when he started Performing in the movie including Deedar in 1951, Devdas in 1955, Naya Daur in 1957 & Paigham in 1959. These movies make his image as a tragedy king in Hindi Cinema.

He is the first actor to win Filmfare Award for Best Actor for “Daag”.He has performed almost all of the leading actresses of that era including Vyjayanthimala, Madhubala, Nargis Dutt, Nimmi, Meena Kumari & Kamini Kaushal. He becomes the first actor in Hindi cinema to be charged $ 120,000 (Rs 89.68 Lacs) per movie.

In 1960 he performed in the movie Mughal-e-Azam which was the highest-grossing movie till 2010, equivalent to $ 10 billion (Rs 1000 cr ) in 2021. In 1981 he performed in the movie “Kranti”. The movie becomes the biggest hit of the year. He wrote produced and perform in the Indian crime drama movie “Ganga Jamna” with Indian actress and dancer Vyjayanthimala. The movie receives the “National Film Award” for “Best Feature Film in Hindi”.

In 1981 he perform in the Hindi language historical drama movie “Kranti” which becomes the biggest hit of the Year. Next year in 1982  he performs with Indian actor and producer Amitabh Bacchan in the Hindi crime drama movie “Shakti” directed by Ramesh Sippy. He then performs in the  Bollywood action movie “Karma” along with Leading actress  Nutan in 1986.

In 1991 he perform in his last Bollywood success movie “Saudagar”.Directed by Subhash Ghai it was a drama movie. In 1994 he won the  “lifetime achievement award” for his contribution to the Hindi film industry. 

Personal Life

He married Indian film actress Saira Banu in 1966 &  later on he married Hyderabad socialite Asma Sahiba, taking her as a second wife in 1981 but the marriage ended in 1983. After that, he and Saira Banu lived in  Bandra in Mumbai. The couple has no children.

Two of his younger brother died during the (COVID-19) after testing positive for covid-19 Aslam Khan died at the age of 88 in August 2020, and Ehsan Khan died at 90 in September 2020.

The many great actors including Shahrukh Khan considers him as their inspiration. The Government of India has honoured him by giving the third highest civilian honour of India “Padma Bhushan” in 1991, the Dada Saheb Phalke award in 1994 and the second-highest civilian honour of India “Padma Vibhushan”.

Death

He died at The P.D. Hinduja National Hospital and Medical Research Centre on 7th July 2021 at 7.30 a.m.He had been suffering from prostate cancer according to Wikipedia. The government of Maharashtra approved his burial with state honours at Juhu Cemetery on 7 July 2021.
