Early Life
She was born in Caracas, Venezuela, on 8th October 1993. Caracas is located along the Guaire River in the northern part of the country, within the Caracas Valley of the Venezuelan coastal mountain range. Her Venezuelan mother, Scarlet Blanco, and her Spanish father José Antonio Muguruza belong to Azkoitia in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country. She started training at the Bruguera Tennis Academy near Barcelona.
Career
At the 2012 US Open, She qualified into the Grand Slam main draw for the first time after several players withdrew, she lost in three sets to Italian professional Sara Errani in the first round. At the 2013 Australian Open, she made it into the main draw after several players withdrew that did not pass into the qualifying match, she lost to Serena Williams in straight sets in the second round.
She started her 2014 season with a quarterfinal appearance at the Auckland Open, where she lost to former world No. 1 and eventual runner-up, American professional Venus Williams. The following week, she qualified and eventually won her first WTA singles title at the Hobart International by defeating retired Czech tennis player Klára Zakopalová in the final in straight sets.
She won both of her singles rubbers in the 2015 Fed Cup World Group II, defeating Romanian professional tennis player Irina-Camelia Begu and world No. 3, Simona Halep, but Spain lost the tie 2–3 after she and her compatriot, Spanish tennis coach Anabel Medina Garrigues, lost the deciding doubles rubber. At the Dubai Championships, she reached her first Premier-5 semifinal in singles, defeating qualifier Slovak-Australian former tennis player Jarmila Gajdosova, 12th seed Jelena Jankovic, fifth seed Agnieszka Radwanska and 13th seed and doubles partner Suárez Navarro before falling to the 17th seed and eventual runner-up, Czech professional Karolina Pliskova.
She started the grass season by playing in her home tournament the 2016 Mallorca Open, where she was the No. 1. She was also in the mixed doubles tournament alongside Rafael Nadal but withdrew at the decision of Nadal, who was already playing both the men’s singles and doubles.
She started the season 2017 at Brisbane International, being the No. 4 seed. She made a run to the semifinals after three-set wins over Sam Stosur and Russian professional Daria Kasatkina, and a straight-sets win over Svetlana Kuznetsova. At the Australian Open, she beat Marina Erakovic, American tennis player Samantha Crawford, Anastasija Sevastova and Romanian Sorana Cîrstea en route to her first quarterfinal at the tournament.
At the 2018 Australian Open, she was the third seed and was also in contention for the No. 1 ranking. In the first round, she beat French wildcard Jessika Ponchet in straight sets. In the second round, Muguruza was shocked by the world No. 88 Hsieh Su-Wei in straight sets.
At the French Open 2019, she Ukrainian professional upset Elina Svitolina. She subsequently lost to American professional Sloane Stephens in straight sets.
In the new season of 2020, she started with a semifinal appearance in Shenzhen, losing to Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova. After pulling out of her quarterfinal match in Hobart due to illness she bounced back at the Australian Open, beating three seeded players, including fifth seed Elina Svitolina, 4th seed Romanian professional Simona Halep and Dutch former Kiki Bertens to reach her fourth Grand Slam final, and first-ever final in Melbourne.
She lost it to 14th seed American professional Sofia Kenin in three sets. She next participated at Dubai, where she defeated Belgian Kim Clijsters and Russian professional Veronika Kudermetova, before being defeated by American professional Jennifer Brady in the quarterfinals, and lost in the quarterfinals of Doha to world No. 1 Australian professional Ashleigh Barty.
At the 2021 Australian Open, in the fourth round, she lost to Naomi Osaka.
Her next tournament was in Dubai. Seeded 9th, she reached the quarterfinals with straight-set wins over Romanian professional tennis player Irina-Camelia Begu, an American professional tennis player. Amanda Anisimova and recent French Open champion Polish professional Iga Swiatek. She then came from a set and a break down to repeat her Doha victory over Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka to reach her third Dubai semifinal.
She then defeated Belgian professional Elise Mertens in two tight sets to reach her second consecutive final and her third of the year where she defeated Czech professional Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets for the title. This also snapped her 3 matches losing streak in the finals. She then competed at the Miami Open and lost to Canadian professional tennis player Bianca Andreescu in the fourth round in three sets.
