Introduction

Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American astrophysicist, planetary scientist, author, and science communicator who studied at Harvard University, the University of Texas at Austin, and Columbia University. 

In 1994, he joined the Hayden Planetarium as a staff scientist and the Princeton faculty as a visiting research scientist and lecturer.

Two years later in 1996, he became director of the planetarium and oversaw its $ 210 million ( INR 15,77.20 Cr)  reconstruction project, which was completed in 2000.

Early Life

Tyson was born on 5th October 1958  in New York City, U.S as the second child of his family to his father Cyril deGrasse Tyson (1927–2016) & mother, Sunchita Maria Tyson born 1928).

He grew up in the Castle Hill neighbourhood of the Bronx, and later in Riverdale.In The Bronx High School of Science (Class of 1976) where he was captain of the wrestling team.

Editor-in-chief of the Physical Science Journal, and graduated in 1976 His interest in astronomy started growing at the age of nine after visiting the sky theatre of the Hayden Planetarium. 

He recalled that “so strong was that imprint of the night sky that I’m certain that I had no choice in the matter, that in fact, the universe called me.” 

During high school, he attended astronomy courses offered by the Hayden Planetarium, which he called “the most formative period” of his life. 

He then studied astronomy in his teen years, and gradually gained some fame in the astronomy community by giving lectures on the subject at the age of fifteen.

Career

He started working at the Hayden Planetarium as a staff scientist in 1994 and then gradually became director in 1996. In 1995, “Natural History” magazine listed his name to write a monthly column, and he has written for several scientific journals.

President George W. Bush chose him to serve on the Commission on the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry and the President’s Commission on Implementation of United States Space Exploration Policy.

He also becomes a very popular figure in pop by appearing on radio shows and late-night talk shows. He has appeared in several TV series, including “Stargate: Atlantis” (2008), “The Big Bang Theory” (2010 and 2018), “The Jim Gaffigan Show” (2016), and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (2015). Tyson has also done voiceover work in “Ice Age: Collision Course” (2016), “Family Guy” (2016), “BoJack Horseman” (2016), and “The Simpsons” (2017).

Personal Life

He married Alice Young in 1988  the couple met in a physics class, and they have two children named Miranda and Travis. He is a wine connoisseur, and “Wine Spectator” and “The World of Fine Wine” have both featured his collection.

Awards and Honors

Distinguished Public Service Medal, a 2005 Science Writing Award, and a 2009 Isaac Asimov Award from the American Humanist Association. 

He then won a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Reality Show Host for “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” in 2014 and was named Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive by “People” magazine in 2000.
